Even if your pet provides comfort and helps you cope with a diagnosed mental or emotional disability, it does not automatically qualify for legal protections as an emotional support animal (ESA) unless you have a valid ESA letter stating they have been prescribed to you.

If you pet already helps you, it's worthwhile to discuss it with a licensed mental health professional familiar with your condition. They can evaluate whether an ESA recommendation (via a formal letter) is appropriate for you.
